August 17, 2009
Minutes
Those Present: Paige Turner, Robin Gibson, Cassandra Denmark, Terrye Howell, Joyce Otte, Pat Cain, Laurncille Anderson, Chairman David Ullman and Superintendent Jesse Jackson
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairman David Ullman called the August 17, 2009 Board of Trustees Meeting to order at the Lake Wales Charter Schools Central Office at 5:00 PM.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES (July 27, 2009)
Chairman Ullman called for additions and/or deletions to the July 27, 2009 Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes. There being none he called for a motion to approve. The motion to approve was made by Terrye Howell with a second by Paige Turner. Motion passed unanimously.
III. RECOGNITIONS
Ms. Caroline Weaver with the Polk County School Board Energy Management Department made presentations to Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, Janie Howard Wilson Elementary, Polk Avenue Elementary, and Lake Wales High School. These schools were presented with the Energy Star award for 2008-2009 for the efficient way in which they work to conserve energy.
IV. FINANCIAL REPORT
Mr. Fisher asked if there were any further questions or comments regarding the financial reports discussed at the August 17, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session. There were no further discussion.
V. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
A. HEALTH INSURANCE 2009-2010
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval to continue LWCS employee health and dental insurances with United Health Care using their two-tier plan as presented and discussed at the August 17, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session with corresponding adjustments to the dependent cost schedule. No change with long-term and life insurance portions. Motion to approve by Joyce Otte, with a second by Terrye Howell. Motion passed unanimously.
B. EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the LWCS Employee Handbook, as discussed and distributed at the August 17, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session. Motion to approve by Joyce Otte, with a second by Terrye Howell. Motion passed unanimously.

C. CHARTER SCHOOLS CAPITAL OUTLAY PLAN
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the LWCS Capital Outlay Plan as presented and discussed at the August 17, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session. Motion to approve by Pat Cain, with a second by Terrye Howell. Motion passed unanimously.
D. PERSONNEL CHANGES
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the Personnel Changes as distributed and discussed at the August 17, 2009 Board Work Session. Motion to approve by Joyce Otte with a second by Paige Turner. Motion passed unanimously.
E. NEXT WORK SESSION AND BOARD MEETING
The September Board of Trustee Work Session and Board Meeting will be on September 21, 2009 at the LWCS Central Office. The Work Session will begin at 3:30 PM and the Board Meeting will begin at 5:00 PM
VII. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT David Ullman
Chairman Ullman reminded the Trustees that the LWCS welcome back and health fair was scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the First Baptist Church beginning at 8:00 AM. The chamber education welcome for teachers is Friday, August 21, 2009 and is also at the First Baptist Church beginning at 7:30 AM.
Mr. Ullman thanked the trustees for beginning their support of their assigned schools and noted that he appreciated their commitment and he was sure the schools did as well.
VIII. TRUSTEE REPORTS
Robin Gibson noted that he thought the Superintendent’s Newsletter was very good and enjoyed receiving it. He noted that he was the Trustee chosen to speak with the Auditors before their presentation to the Board.
Terrye Howell stated that she was honored to be the Trustee chose to be assigned to the Lake Wales High School. She was sorry she missed the first event because it was during the work day for her, but planned to be at every function possible and thought they were doing great things at the high school.
There being no further business for the good of the order, the meeting was adjourned.

LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary students cashed in their Star Bucks – earned in the school’s Positive Behavior Support program – to take part in a Crafty Celebration last week (Jan. 27) that one student described as the “best celebration ever!”
LAKE WALES – Six members of the 2011 Lake Wales Highlanders football team made college commitments today (Feb. 1) as part of National Signing Day.
LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary fifth grade students were mesmerized by concert pianist Thomas Pandolfi (pictured, center), who performed today (Jan. 30) at the Lake Wales Arts Center.
