Minutes
Those Members Present: Paige Turner, Robin Gibson, Cassandra Denmark, Terrye Howell, Joyce Otte, Pat Cain, Laurncille Anderson, Chairman David Ullman and Superintendent Jesse Jackson
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairman David Ullman called the October 19, 2009 Board of Trustees meeting to order at 5:00 PM at the Lake Wales Charter Schools Central Office.
II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Bryan Delgado a student from Polk Avenue Elementary.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES (September 21, 2009)
Chairman Ullman called for corrections and/or additions to the September 21, 2009 Board of Trustees Board Meeting minutes. There being none he called for approval. Motion to approve made by Joyce Otte, second by Terrye Howell, motion passed.
IV. RECOGNITIONS
At this point-in-time Chairman Ullman and Superintendent Jackson stepped to the front for presentations/recognitions. Vice-Chair Cassandra Denmark made the presentations and reading of the proclamations.
A. Proclamation – Association of American University Women (AAUW) Vice-Chair Denmark read the proclamation declaring the month of October as AAUW month. Ms. Betty Martin, President of the AAUW accepted the proclamation of behalf of the organization. Ms. Martin stated that the organization was formed in Lake Wales in 1953 to help support literacy in the community. Years later they acquired a grant to start the art program in Lake Wales. Art Appreciation Week in the schools began this week and Ms. Martin stated it had and is an honor to work with the school and the students. She thanked the principals for all their support.
B. Proclamation – National School Bus Safety Week
Vice-Chair Denmark read the proclamation declaring the third week of October as School Bus Safety Week. In the absence of Transportation Coordinator Jim Perry, Superintendent Jackson accepted the proclamation. Mr. Jackson noted that Mr. Perry and the bus drivers are to be commended for the way they have embraced the students and the community. He noted that during the year they also participate in many community outreach events.

VI. FINANCIAL REPORT
Chairman Ullman ask if there were any additions to the financial report presented at the October 19, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session. Mr. Fisher had nothing to add and there were no further questions from the Board. Mr. Ullman stated he wanted to take this time to thank Mr. Fisher and his entire staff for the great job they are doing with the finances and the past audit. On behalf of the Trustees he wanted to say thank you.
Mr. Fisher noted that he had a great staff in Diane Johnson, Julie Hood and Joanne Thornton and he thanked them for their continued good work.
VII. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
A. TEACHERS’ OUT-OF-FIELD
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the Schools’ Staff Rosters for Teachers-Out-Of-Field and Notification to parents as discussed at the October 19, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session. Motion to approve made by Terrye Howell, second by Cassandra Denmark, motion passed unanimously.
B. EDWARD W. BOK ACADEMY LEASE AGREEMENT
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the Edward W. Bok Academy Lease Agreement as distributed and discussed at the October 19, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session. Motion to approve by Joyce Otte, second by Terrye Howell, motion passed unanimously.
C. SICK LEAVE GIFTING POLICY CHANGE
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the Sick Leave Gifting Policy change as distributed and discussed at the October 19, 2009 Board of Trustees Board Work Session. Motion to approve by Terrye Howell, second by Cassandra Denmark, motion passed unanimously.
D. PERSONNEL CHANGES
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the Personnel Changes as distributed and discussed at the October 19, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session. Motion to approve by Terrye Howell, second by Paige Turner, motion passed unanimously.
E. CONFLICT OF INTEREST (NEW BOARD MEMBERS)
Superintendent Jackson recommended approval of the Resolution for Conflict of Interest for Board Members as presented at the October 19, 2009 Board of Trustees Work Session and signing of document. Motion to approve by Terrye Howell, second by Joyce Otte, motion passed unanimously. Conflict of Interest signed by Trustees this date.
F. NEXT WORK SESSION AND BOARD MEETING
The November Board of Trustee Work Session and Board Meeting will be on November 16, 2009 at the LWCS Central Office. The Work Session will begin at 3:30 PM and the Board Meeting will begin at 5:00 PM

VIII. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Chairman Ullman noted that the Lake Wales Highlanders football was undefeated at present. There was one game left against Winter Haven High School
LWHS Principal Clark Berry informed the Trustees that he had never been as proud of his Highlanders as he was at Friday’s game. There was an incident of fighting on the field and his whole team, including the cheerleaders, went down on one knee and was not involved. That was directly due to the guidance and leadership of Coach Shaffer and his staff.
IX. TRUSTEE REPORTS
Paige Turner thanked the schools and their teams who participated in the Corporate Cup through the Lake Wales YMCA.
Pat Cain reminded those present about the Teachers-Hall-of-Fame banquet to be held October 23, 2009 at the Lake Wales Country Club. Those still needing tickets should contact the Central Office.
X. OTHER BUSINESS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER
There being no further business for the good of the order the meeting was adjourned.

LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary students cashed in their Star Bucks – earned in the school’s Positive Behavior Support program – to take part in a Crafty Celebration last week (Jan. 27) that one student described as the “best celebration ever!”
LAKE WALES – Six members of the 2011 Lake Wales Highlanders football team made college commitments today (Feb. 1) as part of National Signing Day.
LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary fifth grade students were mesmerized by concert pianist Thomas Pandolfi (pictured, center), who performed today (Jan. 30) at the Lake Wales Arts Center.
