Minutes
Present: Paige Turner, Robin Gibson, Cassasndra Denmark, Terrye Howell, Laurncille Anderson, Chairman David Ullman
Not Present: Pat Cain, Joyce Otte, Superintendent Jackson
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairman David Ullman called the November 16, 2009 Board of Trustees meeting to order at the Lake Wales Charter Schools Central Office at 5:00 PM.
II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Stevie Miller and Ashley Garrera from Hillcrest Elementary led the Pledge of Allegiance.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman Ullman called for additions and/or deletions to the October 19, 2009 minutes. There being none he called for approval. Motion to approve by Terrye Howell with a second by Paige Turner. Motion passed unanimously.
IV. RECOGNITIONS
At this point in time Chairman Ullman stepped forward for recognitions and Vice-Chair Cassandra Denmark made the introductions.
A. YMCA CORPORATE CUP PRESENTATION
Mr. Nate Seidl, Director of the Lake Wales YMCA recognized each of the schools who participated in the 2009 YMCA Corporate Cup. Edward W. Bok Academy, Hillcrest Elementary, Polk Avenue Elementary, Janie Howard Wilson Elementary and Lake Wales High School all participated.
This year’s overall winner was Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary. The 1st place Trophy was presented to Principal Ken Henson. Mr. Seidl thanked the Lake Wales Charter Schools for their participation.
Mr. Ullman thanked Mr. Seidl and the Lake Wales YMCA for all they do for the community and our schools.
B. PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD
Morgan Tingle, a fifth grade student from Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary, presented the Trustees with a t-shirt she designed. Each year Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary holds a design competition to raise money for the 5th grade trip to the Kennedy Space Center. Ms. Tingle won this competition and her design was depicted on the t-shirt. These are one-time designs and sold each year to help raise money for this educational field trip.

C. Winter Haven Optimist Club Winners
Vice-Chair Cassandra Denmark announced the Winter Haven Optimist Club Winners from each elementary LWCS. Every year the Winter Haven Optimist Club recognizes two students from each elementary school in Polk County. K-5 students are selected who represent his/her school’s spirit and enthusiasm to excel, said Ms. Denmark. She stated these students have been chosen because they exhibit good attitude, good conduct, and do their best. Principals were called forward to help with presentations with Chairman Ullman.

D. Florida Writes, 5.0 or Better
Vice-Chair Denmark stated we would be recognizing the students from each school that earned a 5.0 or better on the Florida Writes. These Students are rewarded with a trip to Busch Gardens and this year will be going on December 10. In years past we have recognized 24, 38, 15 students, This year we recognize 44 students and the largest group so far. Principals were called forward to help with presentations with Chairman Ullman.

E. Five-Star Schools
At this time the schools who received the Five Star Schools award were presented with plaques.
Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary – Ken Henson accepted and credited Denise Moss and her hard work in pulling the necessary information together.
Hillcrest Elementary – Damien Moses accepted and gave credit to Metta O’Bryant and Debbie Hunt for pulling together this massive amount of information.
Janie Howard Wilson Elementary – Beverly Lynne accepted and credited this award to the hard work of Angela Ryans at her school.
F. Positive Behavior Model School
Ms. Denmark stated recently the Polk County Schools were informed that some of their schools had been awarded the Positive Behavior Model School recognition. Only four (4) schools were honored district wide with the GOLD status and only one (1) had made that status two (2) years in a row. This only school to make it two (2) year in a row was announced as Hillcrest Elementary. Principal Damien Moses accepted this award and gave full credit to Metta

O’Bryant who is the Positive Behavior Specialist and all his teachers for the great work they were doing with the students at Hillcrest Elementary.
V. FINANCIAL REPORT
Brian Fisher asked if there were any further questions with regards to the financials as they were presented at the earlier Work Session. There was no further discussion.
VI. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
In the absence of Superintendent Jackson, Brian Fisher made the following recommendations.
A. PERSONNEL CHANGES
CFO Brian Fisher recommended approval of the Personnel Changes as distributed and discussed at the November16, 2009 with addition of Donna Dunson’s pay increase moving her to Middle School Principal level pay with a student population in access of 500 students. Motion to approve by Robin Gibson with second by Terrye Howell, motion passed unanimously.
B. NEXT WORK SESSION AND BOARD MEETING
Mr. Fisher noted that the December Board of Trustee Work Session and Board Meeting will be on December 14, 2009 at the LWCS Central Office. The Work Session will begin at 3:30 PM and the Board Meeting will begin at 5:00 PM
VIII. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Chairman Ullman thanked the central office staff for coordinating the Leadership Lake Wales last week. Frances McMichael noted that the coordination came from Jeff Bacheldor of Polk Avenue Elementary this year and thanked him for all his work to make that day flow smoothly.
Mr. Ullman noted he had lunch last week with Polk County School Board Member Tim Harris to discuss a lot of items. He requested that Mr. Harris visit Bok Academy and McLaughlin Middle since he said he had not been to McLaughlin in five years to visit. Mr. Harris did visit both schools last Wednesday.
IX. TRUSTEE REPORTS
Laurncille Anderson – Janie Howard Wilson is thinking about a “fun run” for the Red Ribbon week. She wanted the other schools to think about doing this in the Spring.
David Ullman – noted that next week the YMCA was having a Turkey Run for anyone wanting to participate.
Robin Gibson – noted he had a parent talk to him about the recent field trips our schools had taken to the Arts Centers performance. She told him that the buses that came in from the LWCS had students that were very well behaved. He felt this was a direct reflection of the school leadership an appreciated the work they were doing.

Paige Turner – stated that she along with Superintendent Jackson and Frances McMichael had met with the PTA/PTO Presidents and Volunteer Coordinators from each of the schools. She felt it was a good meeting and hoped they will move forward.
X. OTHER BUSINESS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER
There being no further business for the good of the order the meeting was adjourned.

LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary students cashed in their Star Bucks – earned in the school’s Positive Behavior Support program – to take part in a Crafty Celebration last week (Jan. 27) that one student described as the “best celebration ever!”
LAKE WALES – Six members of the 2011 Lake Wales Highlanders football team made college commitments today (Feb. 1) as part of National Signing Day.
LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary fifth grade students were mesmerized by concert pianist Thomas Pandolfi (pictured, center), who performed today (Jan. 30) at the Lake Wales Arts Center.
